“Barwon is the largest electoral district in the state, covering 44 per cent of the land mass of NSW and it’s crucial that we align our efforts to support our growing regional centres.”

Narrabri Shire general manager Stewart Todd, Whitehaven Coal group manager community relations Tim Muldoon, the mayor Cathy Redding and Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries at the official opening of Narrabri Airport on Thursday.

Major upgrades to the runway, taxiway, apron and lighting systems will ‘future proof’ Narrabri Airport to meet the demands of district growth, Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said on Thursday.

Mr Humphries and Narrabri Shire mayor Cathy Redding officially opened the $10.72 million upgrades on Thursday.

“The project was funded through the NSW Government Infrastructure NSW Resources for Regions Program with a grant of $6 million, recognising the need to upgrade facilities supporting the resources industry and growth in the region,” Mr Humphries said.

Council and voluntary planning agreement (VPA) money from coal companies made up the remainder of funds required for the project.

“Funding regional infrastructure and rural NSW is essential,” said Mr Humphries.
