A push to change the name of Narrabri Shire Council has advanced a step, after a close vote in the council chambers last week.
It followed a motion by Wee Waa-based councillor Maxine Booby for a report on what it would take to change the name of the council.
Mayor Cathy Redding had to use her casting vote to get the motion up, after some spirited debate.
Cr Booby has made similar calls before, generally for a specific name, but did not do so this time.
She said the name was too often shortened to “Narrabri Council” and this did the many communities in the shire a disservice.
“Narrabri is the largest centre, yes, sure,” she told councillors.
“But there are seven other centres that are overlooked as a result.”
“If the wording was changed [to] something more inclusive, it would create a feeling of belonging which is what all people need."
