The Crossing Theatre was a hive of activity last week as schoolchildren from throughout Narrabri Shire and as far afield as Coonabarabran, Gunnedah and Moree fought it out to be crowned top dogs in science.
The occasion was the annual Rotary Science and Engineering Challenge, where primary and secondary students again got a chance to test their skills against each other.
And not just any skills.
Some students built a buggy, wired a virtual city, constructed a bridge, built an articulated hand and built a catapult.
The brief for the grasping at straws challenge required the students to design, build and use a ‘bionic hand’ built from PVC pipe, string, straws and timber coffee stirrers.
And there were some great efforts.
