Narrabri Shire Council has all but finalised its submission into the Narrabri Gas Project, and has taken a middle line in relation to it.
Councillors discussed the submission at a meeting on Tuesday, and there could be some minor alterations before it is finally sent to the Department for Planning and the Environment.
The 23-page submission is neither in favour of or opposed to the coal seam gas project, but has called for the “precautionary principle” to be applied in the assessment and to any potential development conditions for the proposal.
It focuses on potential issues and asks how Santos will address them, and asks the Planning Assessment Commission - the body that will make the decision on behalf of the state government - to conduct peer reviews of some parts of the 7000-page Environmental Impact Statement lodged by the company.
At Tuesday’s meeting, councillors largely expressed their satisfaction with the submission, though there were a few questions.
