'No further water recovery,' council urges

Narrabri Shire Council holds extraordinary meeting on Tuesday

MAKING A POINT: Namoi Water executive officer Jon-Maree Baker addresses Tuesday’s extraordinary council meeting about the impact of the Murray Darling Basin Authority proposals on Narrabri Shire.

The Murray Darling Basin Authority has extended the deadline for submissions to its Basin Plan, and ahead of that Narrabri Shire Council took the opportunity to get some final input into its submission.
The council held an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday, where it heard from Wee Waa Chamber of Commerce president Ann-Maree Galagher and Namoi Water executive officer Jon-Maree Baker before finalising its submission.
Both women stressed the importance of the issue to the shire, and Wee Waa in particular. The MDBA’s most recent proposal is to take an extra 10 gigalitres from the Namoi. That has proven to be a bitter pill for a water-loss weary region.
Mrs Galagher spoke about the effect of water on the Wee Waa economy.
