Shire’s Senior of the Year

Award recognises Boggabri’s Ron Rees’ 58 years of community service

Narrabri Shire 2018 Senior of the Year Award winner Ron Rees is congratulated by Archidennis Nativida representing the Whiddon Group, Mayor Cathy Redding and Deputy Mayor Cameron Staines at the Senior’s Festival luncheon at Narrabri RSL Club on Wednesday.

Narrabri Shire’s 2018 Senior of the Year Ron Rees can reflect on more than five decades of voluntary work across the spectrum of community service, from school Parents and Citizens group to his role as a Narrabri Shire councillor and much more in between.

Narrabri RSL Club auditorium was filled to capacity yesterday for the announcement of Mr Rees as Senior of the Year.

The audience applauded his citation which embraces long service and support for the Boggabri and wider community.

One element of Mr Rees’ service was not mentioned on the citation, his eight years as a shire councillor.

However, that tenure included an achievement of which Mr Rees

acknowledged he was proud, initiating the building of the Cox’s Creek bridge at Boggabri.

As councillor, Mr Rees successfully pushed for the bridge and moved that it be built, replacing the aged timber structure on a key traffic route which was periodically covered by floodwater when the Namoi River rose.

The Senior of the Year was presented with his award by Mayor Cathy Redding at a special Senior’s Festival luncheon.
