Davey steps it up a gear

Local boxer feeling confident ahead of 2018 Golden Gloves

Narrabri boxer Shannan Davey, right, spars with North West Boxing head coach Tony O’Connor on Monday, just a day after Davey went up a division and defeated Sutherland PCYC boxer Jared El-Hassan at the K Ranch Arena in South Western Sydney.

Local boxer Shannan Davey will step into the ring tomorrow at the 2018 Queensland Golden Gloves boxing tournament.

The North West Boxing Club athlete will fight in the 64kg elite division at the tournament, which is being held at the Acacia Ridge Hotel from today through to Sunday.

Davey’s first bout will be tomorrow, following the quarter finals which will be fought today.

Davey drew straight through to the semi-finals, so will only compete a maximum two times instead of three.

Should he win his semi-final he will compete for the gold medal in the final on Sunday.

Davey enters the tournament feeling rather confident.

He has had two practice fights in the past two weekends, one which he won.

The other was a close loss where the 18-year-old was surprised at the result, thinking he had done enough to win the bout.

While he is fighting in the 64kg division at the current tournament, Davey’s two most recent two fights saw him step up and take on opponents from the 69kg elite division.
