Let the rebuild begin

Outcome for destroyed Gately Field amenities building finally reached

The Gately Field amenities building after the storm that destroyed it in November last year.

The facilities at Gately Field are finally going to be repaired – though not to the satisfaction of Narrabri Shire Council.

Narrabri Shire councillors have approved a quote of $169,756 from contractor John Lyng Group to rebuild the amenities building at the sports ground.

It was destroyed by the storm in November 2016 – and suffered further damage in another storm in January - which has meant more than a few headaches for those participating in junior soccer this winter.

They have had to use portable toilets and, more recently, a canteen, after the latter was initially housed under another shelter.

Cr Robert Kneale said he had received several inquiries about when the building was going to be repaired, but wondered why it had taken so long.

Council development and economic growth director Tony Meppem said there had been a couple of reasons for the hold up.

The first was the insurance company’s assessor only came to inspect the damage four weeks after the first storm, which was just before the Christmas-New Year break.

It had been hard to get quotes from local builders initially.
