The Narrabri Harness Racing Club has outdone itself once again, putting on an entertaining meeting that kept a strong crowd captivated from start to finish.
On a warm day at the Narrabri Paceway, the club’s annual TAB meeting included the highly-anticipated Narrabri Cup, which was won by the Gregory Coney-trained, Anthony Varga-driven Ultimate Dawn.
But the race of the day took place 70 minutes after the Narrabri Cup.
That was the Santos Cup Carnival of Cups race.
In the 2160-metre final the Lola Weidemann-trained and driven Chevals Diamond won by the tightest of margins, edging out the Aaron Goadsby-trained, Guy Chapple-driven Last Party.
After winning their respective qualifying heats at the Narrabri non-TAB meeting on March 18, the pair went head-to-head down the final straight on Monday, and a decision on the result could not be made instantly.
There was a nervous wait before Chevals Diamond was announced as the winner of the $10,200 race.
The victory was the eight-year-old bay geldings’s ninth of his career.
He has earned a total of $46,555 career prizemoney, $12,334 of which he has won this season following a trio of firsts, seconds and thirds.
He has now finished in a top-three position in seven of his past eight starts.
There were two locally-trained pacers which placed on the day.
